After losing a loved one who served in the military, you should consult
with a funeral home that has experience planning military funerals. You
are entitled to a military funeral service if you die while on active
duty or in the selected reserve, if you die after serving in the military
and leaving with an honorable discharge, or were discharged due to injury
or disability. Military funeral customs are the same from state to state
and cemetery to cemetery.
The funeral casket arrives at the cemetery draped in an American flag,
and is carried to the gravesite by a six-man honor guard. A chaplain or
pastor conducts the funeral service and committal service, and the honor
guard holds the flag above the casket. A seven-person team fires three
volleys into the air, and a military bugler then plays “Taps.”
The honor guard then ceremoniously folds the flag, and the highest ranking
officer then presents it to the family.
